Tigray’s Youth at the Crossroads: A Choice That Shapes the Future

My reflections

[By Tekie Hagos]

When you make a choice, you change the future. For the youth of Tigray, this is not just a saying; it is the very reality of their lives.

Too many young Tegaru, burdened by despair and the weight of uncertainty, have chosen to leave their homeland. In search of opportunity, they embark on perilous journeys through deserts and across seas, only to face death, imprisonment, or exploitation. Each loss is not only a personal tragedy but also a wound to Tigray’s future, its strength, talent, and hope drained away.

But there is another path, one far more difficult yet infinitely more rewarding: the choice to stay, to resist hopelessness, and to take part in the peaceful struggle for change. This is the choice to build, rather than to abandon. By engaging in the creation of democratic institutions, by contributing to economic recovery, and by committing to justice and dignity, young Tegaru hold the power to transform their homeland.

The path forward will not be easy. It requires courage, discipline, and sacrifice. Yet history reminds us that nations rise when their youth choose purpose over despair, resilience over escape, and unity over division.

To the youth of Tigray: the future is not written; it will be shaped by the choices you make today. Stand as builders of democracy, protectors of justice, and drivers of recovery. Your generation carries the responsibility and the power to make Tigray a land of hope, not despair.

I call on every young Tegaru to rise to the challenge; choose to build, choose to lead, and choose to secure Tigray’s tomorrow.

  1. The author’s call to the youth of Tigray to save Tigray from the repressive regime is timely.

The people’s struggle against the backward TPLF has just started spontaneously in Mekhoni after the TPLF forces shot civilians for intervening to protect the kidnapping of an official.

It is time the youth and diaspora strengthened our struggle to end the TPLF authoritarian rule and human rights abuses that are openly engaged against the people of Tigray.

The youth of Tigray must coordinate to protect our freedom, liberty, and democracy and establish good governance in Tigray. No more human rights abuses in Tigray.

Keep up the good work and thank you Tekie!
