Tegadalay Berhanu Kidanu, a decorated former Tigray Defence Forces (TDF) Intelligence Officer and survivor of an assassination attempt himself now in exile, has courageously exposed the TPLF-linked top TDF commanders for assassinating members of the TDF who question and expose TDF commanders’ corruption, who stole the TDF’s logistics and food aid, and who sold scrap metals from destroyed tanks and vehicles.
Berhanu has revealed a hidden web of criminal coordination, targeted assassinations, poisonings, and an orchestrated purge of ethical commanders involving senior TDF and TPLF political figures. One of the targeted casualties is Dr Solomon Gebere, a moral figure for opposing corruption, theft, and smuggling.
The TDF was once the embodiment of Tigray defenders and protectors against genocide. Tigray’s survival is now threatened not only by external adversaries but also by a malignant internal faction within the TDF intimately tied to the Debretsion-led TPLF splinter group.
However, in the post-genocidal war vacuum, a faction loyal to the Debretsion-led TPLF has infiltrated the upper ranks of the TDF, transforming it into a militia serving its narrow interests. The faction of corps and army-level TDF leadership is, directly tied to Debretsion-led TPLF, compromising military neutrality and national unity. This clique has entrenched a culture of cronyism, corruption, and nepotism within the TPLF and TDF’s command structure, dismantling Tigray’s unity and once-principled legacy of patriotic resistance against Tigray genocide.
Brhanu’s testimony and his investigative findings, supported by classified documents and eyewitness accounts, are a call to action for every Tigrayan committed to justice and survival. The revelations from Berhanu should galvanise the Tigray Interim Administration and political parties to unite against these abuses and seek accountability for the atrocities committed in the name of Tigray. Survival in such a climate of fear and repression for TDF members demands collective courage and resilience to bring the criminals to account.
It is imperative that Tigrayans come together to demand not only justice for the past and present to shield the members of TDF from targeted assassinations but also foster solidarity and collaboration to bring the criminal TPLF leadership and TDF commanders to justice. This unity will empower the members of the TDF to stand firm against the criminal commanders’ corruption, targeted killings, and human rights abuses, ensuring that such atrocities are never repeated and victims received justice. By fostering a sense of shared purpose, Tigrayans can build a formidable front that lays the groundwork for a more just and equitable Tigray. This collective strength will be crucial in dismantling the cycle of corruption, theft, criminal activities, and targeted killings and promoting a culture of democracy, accountability and justice within the TDF chain of command structure to restore TDF’s professionalism and integrity.
