In moments like these, we must remain especially vigilant in safeguarding our civil and political rights and upholding the inherent dignity of every human being. Our commitment to justice and democratic values is measured not by how readily we defend popular causes, but by whether we stand firm when doing so is difficult or unpopular—and speak out for those who are vulnerable, marginalized, or unable to defend themselves. In such moments, our principles matter most in the protection of civilians during conflict.
We believe that every effort should be made to prevent drone attacks that endanger civilian lives, including the incident in Rama on October 30, 2026, which reportedly killed 14 people and injured hundreds. Such a devastating loss of life warrants serious scrutiny and should never be dismissed as an unavoidable consequence of conflict.
Greater care and accountability could help prevent such tragedies and prevent others from exploiting civilian suffering for political gain through self-serving peace narratives and propaganda outlets. Beyond the immediate human toll, attacks of this nature endanger public safety, erode public trust, and risk further escalating tensions in an already volatile region. Protecting civilian lives must remain paramount, regardless of the political or military circumstances. Equally concerning is the possibility that, during times of crisis, we may relinquish our fundamental freedoms and civil liberties to the government.

Although there may be broad agreement that the TPLF bears greater responsibility for instigating this war, aligning itself with the Eritrean regime to destabilize the region, and extending the conflict into Rama, far beyond Eritrea’s own territory, these considerations must never diminish our concern for the innocent lives lost as a result.
The indiscriminate loss of civilian life is deeply concerning and underscores the importance of exercising sound judgment, restraint, and rational decision-making, particularly during periods of heightened emotion and national crisis. Officials and the institutions they oversee are thereby granted excessive discretion under the pretext of protecting national security and public welfare. Security concerns must never serve as a blanket justification for unchecked authority or as a shield against accountability.
If government officials seek to conceal misconduct or suppress inconvenient truths, we share a responsibility to advocate for transparency, demand accountability, and ensure that the truth emerges through lawful, principled, and peaceful means. Our commitment to justice and human dignity must remain steadfast, particularly when defending these principles is most challenging.
We encourage the ENDF and the Tigray Peace Force to remain united and to use this defining struggle as an opportunity to grow stronger and demonstrate their resolve. By working together, they can navigate challenges, stay true to their principles, and carry forward the mandate entrusted to them by the people’s voice. We sincerely hope the Federal Government will uphold truth and fairness and clearly address the drone attacks on civilians in Rama.
